It’s 2024! Happy New Year! The start of the new year is always a good time to get good intentions and positive action in place in our personal lives but also at work.
As website developers and technology experts, we look after websites for many different organisations, hosting them and ensuring that security updates are actioned to keep them as secure as possible. We take cyber security very seriously and are ISO/IEC 27001 certified (the world's best-known standard for information security management systems) so our clients know they are in expert hands.
This month, we wanted to share with you some simple (but important) ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ when it comes to cyber security. We hope you find them useful.
- Establish a cyber security process for your organisation – educate every employee on how this works and the part they play in it, including data handling.
- Keep your software up to date. Updates contain security updates which will help to keep your systems more secure.
- Update passwords regularly. Use strong passwords, or passwords containing 3 random words.
- Review access regularly. Who has access and why and do they still need it?
- Ensure that when people leave your organisation, they no longer have access to anything.
- Back up important files and data throughout the day.
- Lock your screen when you step away from your desk.
- Use a VPN (virtual private network) rather than a public network when you connect to the internet outside of your office. A VPN masks your IP address and encrypts your data.
- Use suppliers who have security accreditations.
- Use the same passwords for more than one account.
- Write down passwords.
- Share your personal passwords.
- Use public networks to connect to the internet.
- Expect your employees to know how to handle cyber security if you haven’t trained them on your processes.
- Ignore software security updates.
- Click a website link if it doesn’t look right.
